Who invented pizza and where did pizza originate? Who knows? What’s more important, do you like a good, thin New York Style Pizza crust, with a crisp bottom, and light airy middle that you can pull apart with your teeth?

Do you like plenty of premium mozzarella cheese and generous amounts of fresh meat toppings? Just like a New York Style Pizza?

Do you like lots of grease – so much of it that it drips down the underside of your arm and onto your ribs when you attempt to lift a slice up to your mouth? Uh, maybe not quite like a New York Style Pizza?
If you answered yes to all of the above, you will love Anthonys Pizza.  Is there a better New York Style Pizza?

On the other hand, if you prefer not to have so much grease that you require an oil-pan under your dining table, you might consider looking else where to satisfy your craving for a New York Style Pizza. There are plenty of places that claim to have New York Style Pizza in Denver. So, while Anthonys Pizza joints are cropping up everywhere go out and compare them to a real New York Style Pizza in New York.

Where to find It

The original Anthonys Pizza joint is a popular landmark near DU in Denver, CO.
There is no doubt, plenty of fans of Anthony’s Pizza original restaurant. On their website, they now advertise over 20 franchise locations in the Denver Metro area. The franchise deal must have occurred very recently. I was surprised to see an Anthony’s Pizza open up near my home in Arvada, CO, and I wondered if it was the same company I knew near Denver University. My family and I decided to give it a try for Lunch one Sunday afternoon. I only needed to walk in and smell the aroma of the hot, large pizza ovens, to know this was the same place. There is nothing better than the smell of fresh baked pizza crust, and Anthony’s does have that look, feel and smell of an authentic New York Pizza joint.

The menus vary slightly from location to location. Other menu items offered at the Arvada location include Meatball, Sausage, Eggplant and Chicken Parmesan sandwiches; a variety of pasta dishes, including spaghetti, baked ziti, ravioli and a few different choices of salads. We ordered a large Pepperoni Pizza for the four of us for a fair price of $16.50. They also sell pretty generously sized single cheese slices for $2.25ea. Pasta dishes and sandwiches range from around $6.25 to $6.75. It is pretty reasonable.

When our 18” pizza came out of the oven it appeared every bit as mouth watering as you would imagine from the great aroma; A great looking crust; thin, cheesy and fully covered with crisp, round slices of pepperoni. Grabbing a slice was a bit of a messy proposition as there were gobs of bubbling oil flowing over the top of the cheese. Getting one onto your plate without leaving a trail of the oozing flow of orange-colored grease on the table, proved to be a bit of a challenge. Anthony’s advertises on it’s website that it’s the pizza you like to fold. I found that it is pretty much necessary to fold it, due to how soggy it is from all the oil. The crust would be quite good, if wasn’t so drenched from the juice. The pepperoni and cheese were as good as advertised. You can add a little flavor with the available jars of Parmesan, red pepper and garlic seasoning salt at the counter. I was only able to finish a couple of slices before succumbing to the fear of what affect the grease might have on my system if I continued. My wife sopped up as much as the oil as she could with napkins before eating just one slice. We boxed up the remainder of the pizza, which was about half and took it home. It was later at home when I realized the purpose of all that grease. When I took a slice out of the refrigerator and reheated it in our toaster oven later that day, I noticed that much of the excess oil had baked into the dough. It was no longer sopping with grease, yet the baked-in oil kept it from tasting dry and bland as you would normally expect from a re-heated slice of pizza. Aha! Then I knew: This kind of pizza is designed to be re-heated in Anthony’s own large pizza ovens and sold by the slice. It’s really much better that way. If you want to eat it as it is freshly made out of the oven, you’d better be in the mood to drink a quart of oil, or take it home first, save it and enjoy it later – the way it’s meant to be savored by the slice in a New York Pizza joint: in its reheated form. Anthony’s Pizza Recipe succeeds. Is it the best Pizza? Probably not, but it’s worth a try. At the very least, you will enjoy the pizza dough recipe, the thin crust, and generous amounts of cheese.
